JumpStart partners with local communities to identify and pilot solutions that leverage local talent and resources – creating sustainable interventions to nurture a brighter future.

South Africa has made real progress in building schools and providing access to education, but most classroom environments are not easy with large class sizes, varying learner competence, negative mathematics stigma, and resource constraints. This reflects in the country’s consistent underperformance in international mathematics and science studies and needs urgent attention to help the country prosper.

Data and data technologies are at the heart of JumpStart’s success.
Non-profit impact and accountability needs strong M&E systems. JumpStart has technology solutions to measure outcomes, rapidly monitor implementation, and gather data to support transparent decision-making and sharing.

Most Foundation Phase Teachers in South Africa have not typically received training on teaching foundation phase mathematics. Mathematics experts and leaders in our tertiary institutions are acting to address this. JumpStart is working with them to give in-service teachers the best of this training.

Youth represent one of the biggest untapped resources in South Africa with youth unemployment over 40%. We recruit unemployed youth from our school communities, train then as maths tutors and support their transition into meaningful careers.
After their experience in schools, many take up careers in education.
