Women’s Day – celebrating female leaders

On Women’s Day we take courage from and are inspired by so many women who paved the way for meaningful change in South Africa. This year, we shine the light on two special women who have contributed to the growth and progress of the JumpStart programme in Sasolburg. Educator, Sellwane Sindi Mthimkhulu, and tutor, Mamela Nkitseng, are leading the way as they mentor and inspire the team there. Sellwane Sindi Mthimkhulu “I first met Mrs Mthimkhulu at Kopanelang-Thuto School in September 2013,” said tutor Maki Skabata. “She was the Head of Department in Foundation Phase while I was doing a learnership for my Grade R Diploma. In 2017, I joined the Jumpstart Foundation and was placed under Mrs Mthimkhulu’s guidance once again. She told me that the best results come when you make an effort to understand the children in your care. Most importantly, she taught me to respect my colleagues and to ask for […]

Working for youth employment on World Youth Skills Day

On 15 July, the United Nations observes World Youth Skills Day. At the JumpStart Foundation, every day is committed to developing youth skills. This year we recognise and celebrate the remarkable young people who serve our youngest learners in under-resourced schools under the extremely difficult conditions they currently face. COVID-19 and tumultous times are a significant challenge. Context Africa has the world’s youngest, fastest-growing population. By 2030 – nine years from now – 375 million young people will be in the continent’s job market. The untapped potential and talents of young people and the so-called “youth bulge” are reasons that Africa’s potential as an up and coming economic powerhouse is often touted. However, stumbling blocks remain, including the mismatch between the skills of young people entering the workforce and the skills needed by employers. This mismatch is a major threat to Africa’s growth ambitions, as young people are not being sufficiently equipped with even the […]

Play your part on International Earth Day

Today is International Earth Day and the COVID-19 pandemic has certainly given us all pause of thought. How can we make a difference to the Earth that is our only home? What can we do to help restore her? All members of the JumpStart team strive to contribute to sustainability efforts as much as possible. For the last year the world has rushed to online communication and education. This changed our lives beyond our wildest dreams, saving many air flights and other transportation costs. Undoubtedly, a positive benefit, but did you know that online technology has an environmental impact? This Euro News article emphasises the need for a holistic approach when evaluating our environmental impact. It features the Purdue University study that estimates that one videoconferencing hour “emits between 150 and 1000 grams of carbon dioxide. It also uses up to 12 litres of water and an area of land around the size of an […]

JumpStart recognised for Nedbank Private Wealth Innovation Awards

JumpStart’s organisational resilience and innovation was recognised this week by the Nedbank Private Wealth Innovation Awards naming us one of five finalists in both categories. The awards recognise organisations that adapted to thrive in the face of difficulties, inspiring others with their response to a shock, like the COVID-19 pandemic. Among other things, the adjudicators assessed our preparedness for crises, our response to the pandemic, as well as our learnings that can benefit other organisations. Our response to the crisis General Manager, Callen Hodgskiss, reflected on JumpStart’s approach: “Because our programmes takes place in the schools, we had to find a way to make home learning possible – especially as very few learners had any learning materials at home. Contacting them proved challenging! The first step was to reach out to peers and colleagues. NASCEE really helped with this. “It rapidly became clear that in hard lockdown, many learners would be difficult to reach. We […]
