2023 Annual Teacher Survey Results: Empowering Early Grade Mathematics Teachers

At JumpStart, we continuously strive to improve and support the development of our educators. In November 2023 we performed our Annual Teacher Survey, which engaged 438 educators across six projects. The survey provides valuable insights into the programme’s impact and areas for growth.

The JumpStart Programme’s Impact on Mathematics Teaching

One of the key takeaways from the survey is the positive influence the JumpStart Programme has had on mathematics teaching. An encouraging 64.9% of teachers agreed that they now understand how to teach mathematics better, with 29.7% strongly agreeing. This feedback highlights the programme’s effectiveness in enhancing teachers’ skills and confidence in mathematics instruction.

Enhancing Teaching Through Practical Application

The JumpStart Programme emphasizes “learning by doing.” Instead of focusing solely on formal training sessions, we encourage teachers to implement new strategies and tools directly in their classrooms. This practical approach has proven effective, as teachers have reported significant improvements in their own mathematics skills and their ability to utilize new teaching techniques and materials, such as the NumberSense workbooks and DBE materials.

Teacher Feedback and Programme Improvements

Teacher feedback is essential for the continuous improvement of our programme. The survey provided valuable insights into areas where we can further enhance our support. Teachers expressed a need for more regular and structured feedback, additional training, and the integration of more digital tools and resources. We are committed to addressing these needs to ensure that our programme remains responsive to the evolving needs of educators and students.

Broadening the Impact: Success Stories and Future Directions

The survey results also highlighted numerous success stories. Teachers reported notable improvements in their students’ mathematics skills, with many finding the NumberSense workbooks particularly effective.

Conclusion

The Annual Teacher Survey results show that the JumpStart Programme is making meaningful progress in enhancing mathematics education. By focusing on practical application and continuous improvement, the programme helps teachers develop their skills and fosters a supportive educational environment. Looking ahead, JumpStart is committed to building on its successes and addressing the needs highlighted in the survey. In response to the feedback, JumpStart is partnering with sector experts to provide mathematics pedagogical training based on proven materials recently introduced in Bed graduate training at 10 universities The programme will also pilot the use of digitally enabled mini assessments to further support and enhance the teaching and learning process. JumpStart remain committed to continuously evolving and adapting, and working in collaboration to find the solutions.
